What is Botulinum toxin?
The cosmetic form of botulinum toxin, sometimes referred to as "Anti-Wrinkle" by clients, is a popular injectable that temporarily reduces or eliminates facial fine lines and wrinkles. The most commonly treated areas are frown lines, forehead creases and crow's feet near the eyes. Several other areas have been treated such as thick bands in the neck, thick jaw muscles, lip lines and gummy smiles.
Botulinum toxin is a purified substance that's derived from bacteria. Injections of botulinum toxin block the nerve signals to the muscle in which it was injected. Without a signal, the muscle is not able to contract. The end result is diminished unwanted facial wrinkles or appearance. This gives the overlying facial skin a softer, smoother and more youthful appearance.
What does Botulinum toxin treatment involve?
Before
All treatments follow a detailed pre-treatment consultation. Your consultation starts with a discussion with the specialist of the look you wish to achieve. They will advise you which treatments will be most effective at helping you reach your goals. If you decide to proceed we will make a detailed recording of your medical history and conduct a careful examination of your face. This consultation may last 30minutes.
During
After cleansing the skin, the Botulinum toxin injections are placed directly into the muscle areas which you have decided to have treated. The needle used is extremely fine and most clients experience only minimal discomfort, if at all. The entire Botulinum toxin treatment takes about 15 minutes. You will start to see the effects develop slowly over the following week resulting in the lines visibly decreasing.
After
Following the treatment there may be minimal redness. Bruising is uncommon. Most clients continue with their normal day without anybody noticing. It is important not to massage or rub the areas after treatment so we advise you not to have a facial or do vigorous exercise. We also recommend that you remain upright for 3-4 hours after your treatment.

How long do the effects last?
It can take about 4-14 days to see the full effects after the initial treatment. The cosmetic effects can last up to six months but typically range from three to four months. Eventually most people require re-treatment as the wrinkles reappear. However in some treated areas (such as frown wrinkles), the wrinkles may return less severe after repeated treatments as the unconscious muscle contraction habit is broken. We offer all our clients a free two week follow up appointment after their first treatment to assess the effect of treatment and administer any top up treatments if necessary.
Are there any side effects?
Most people find that the injections cause only mild local pain and tenderness. Immediately after the injection there may be mild swelling at the injection site which usually subsides within 48 hours. Slight bruising is also possible. Side effects of these treatments are extremely rare. Occasionally, the treatment may relax nearby muscle groups causing temporary drooping of the eyebrow or eyelids. This may last for a few weeks but will resolve with time. As with any medicine an allergic reaction may occur, this is however quite rare. Conversely there may be some unintended benefits in some people such as easing of tension type headaches as the muscles in the forehead relax.

The final result can be tailored to each client and can be discussed at the initial free consultation. A follow-up appointment is made 2 weeks after your initial treatment, at which time a top-up can be given if required.

Remain upright for 3-4 hours after your treatment.
Avoid rubbing or touching the injected areas and avoid having facials and massage for 48 hours this is to ensure that the treatment remains at the site of injection.
Avoid vigorous exercise and alcohol for 48 hours.
If bruising develops the you can apply Arnica cream
Paracetamol can be taken for mild pain post procedure

What are dermal fillers?
Dermal fillers are a soft injectable gel used for facial aesthetic treatments, and are injected into the skin. Dermal fillers are based on Hyaluronic acid (HA) which is a substance that naturally exists in your body. They are designed to effectively reduce the appearance of unwanted wrinkles, contour and create volume, and to revitalise the skin. They are long lasting, but not permanent.
What is hyaluronic acid?
Hyaluronic acid is a sugar molecule that exists naturally in almost all living organisms. It binds water and can act as a lubricant and shock absorber in movable parts of the body such as joints. It is also important for the transport of nutrients and in regulating water balance in skin and maintains skin elasticity.
How do dermal fillers work?
By boosting the skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid, dermal fillers revitalise and add volume to the skin, instantly diminishing the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and giving a natural softer look. Dermal fillers are a soft injectable gel consisting of stabilised, non-animal hyaluronic acid. The gel is tissue-friendly and closely resembles the hyaluronic acid that exists naturally in the body. It is long-lasting but not permanent.
What are the benefits of dermal filler?
Dermal filler injections provide an easy way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles, smooth the skin and give a more youthful appearance. The result of a single treatment can be seen instantly and can last for around 6 to 9 months. Dermal filler injections can give a natural looking result that does not affect facial expression. As your face changes over time, dermal fillers allow you to control you looks subtly as you age.
Do’s And Don’ts Before + After Your Filler Treatment
It can be intimidating to receive dermal fillers for the first time. Here at JA Aesthetics, SMPU and Beauty Academy, we believe that educating our clients allows them to make the best decisions for their individual needs. We understand that, although it’s a small, nonsurgical and relatively painless procedure, receiving fillers can be intimidating for someone who’s never done it. Because of this, we’ve put together a little guide for what to expect before and after receiving a filler treatment.
What To Do Before Lip Fillers And Injections
In order to reduce the amount of bruising and swelling at the injection site, JA Aesthetics, SMPU and Beauty Academy makes the following recommendations about how to prepare for fillers:
One Week Prior to Lip Injections
Avoid blood thinning over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, Motrin, ibuprofen, and Aleve.
Avoid supplements, including St. John’s Wort, Gingko biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E.
2 Days Prior to Injections
Avoid topical products such as Tretinoin (Retin-A), Retinol, Retinoids, Glycolic Acid, or any “anti-aging” products.
Avoid waxing, bleaching, tweezing, or using hair removal cream on the area to be treated.
Do start taking Arnica two days prior to the procedure. (This is not required, but it will help to lessen bruising.)
24 Hours Prior to Injections
Do not drink alcoholic 24 hours prior.
General Recommendations
If you have previously suffered from facial cold sores, there is a risk that the needle punctures could contribute to another eruption of cold sores. Please let your practitioner know if you are prone.
Do not use dermal fillers if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, are allergic to any ingredients, or suffer from neurological disorders. Please inform us if you have any questions about this prior to your treatment. You can learn more about what to expect from lip fillers in this related blog post.
The Day Of Treatment
Arrive at the clinic with a “clean face”—washed and without makeup.
In order to maximise your comfort during the procedure, a topical anesthetic may be applied. In some cases, a local numbing medication will be injected into or around the area(s) to be treated.
What To Do After Fillers: The First Hour
Apply an ice pack and Arnica topically—Arnica + Bromelain tablets are both natural supplements to reduce bruising.
Take acetaminophen to reduce pain as necessary.
Avoid itching, massaging, or picking around the injection site. This is normal and generally disappears within a few hours to a few days. If these symptoms last more than 3 days, please contact our clinic.
How To Reduce Swelling After Lip Injections 6 to 10 Hours After Treatment
Until the swelling and redness have resolved, avoid intense heat in the treated area(s). This includes sunbathing, tanning, saunas, hot tubs, or hot wax.
To help alleviate swelling, we recommend an antihistamine during the day, such as Zyrtec or Claritin, and Benadryl at night.
If there is a visible bump, you can massage the area. Depending on the areas treated and the product used, you may feel “firmness.” These areas will soften and settle with time (usually 1-2 weeks).
Sunscreen and makeup can be applied, and you may use a gentle cleanser on the area.
How To Reduce Bruising After Fillers
Avoid drinking alcohol or partaking in strenuous exercise, as it may result in additional bruising.
To help alleviate bruising, we recommend taking Arnica or Bromelain, eating fresh pineapple, and applying ice to the area.
Important Lip Filler Aftercare Notes
PLEASE CONTACT US IMMEDIATELY IF YOU:
Have fever and/or chills
Have discolored blotches in areas not injected
Have blanching of injected areas
Notice the area appears red and/or hot to the touch
Have severe or increasing pain

For those who worry about face looking big if facial lines have fallen off the elasticity to correct the asymmetry of the face, for those who have a double chin, for those who are troubled with big cheekbones, for those who do not have a good effect on the exiting facial contouring.
What are the recommendations for BODY
If you uncomfortable with liposuction diet does not help, if you want to lose weight quickly in a short time, if you want to solve localised fat in a specific area, if you did not get the benefits of existing obesity procedures.
1. Please drink at least 300cc of water immediately after the treatment.
2. Fasting until the evening of the day of surgery and the morning of the next day
- Decomposes and discharges unused fat in the body, reducing the size of fat cells
3. Secondary treatment possible 7-10 days after treatment
4. The forearm and thigh hurt when the needle is inserted, so apply anaesthetic cream.
How does the fat dissolving injections work?
The active ingredient in the fat dissolving injections comes from a naturally occurring substance made in the liver. It normally helps in digesting dietary fat. When injected into areas of unwanted fat, it breaks down the fat cells and helps the body to metabolise and filter away this fat. It has been studied over 10 years and has been safely used in thousands of clients in worldwide clinical trials.
Note that we can treat fat in other small areas of the skin as easily as the double chin such as the jowls and bra fat pads.
What can I expect during the treatment?
During each treatment session, the skin is first cleansed and numbed to prepare it for injections. The injector then administers several quick injections beneath your chin. Treatment sessions usually take 20 minutes or less. After your treatment, you may return to your normal activities immediately.
Although you may experience some bleeding, swelling, bruising, tenderness or numbness at or near the treatment area, these side effects are typically short-lived and mild.
How many sessions do I need?
The fat dissolving injections are administered as a series of sessions spaced 6 to 8 weeks apart for the best results.
Most clients will need between 2 to 4 treatments (some up to 6), depending on how much fat is in the under chin area to start with.
Over time, you’ll notice your double chin gradually receding, revealing a slimmer, natural-looking neckline.
The final results are expected to last at least 5 years.
Who should not receive fat dissolving injections?
Fat dissolving injections have not been approved for clients under 18 years of age.
You should also not receive fat dissolving injections if you have an infection in the treatment area, if you have had or plan to have surgery on your face, neck, or chin; have had cosmetic treatments on your face, neck, or chin; have had or have medical conditions in or near the neck area; have had or have trouble swallowing; have bleeding problems; are pregnant or plan to become pregnant (it is not known if this fat dissolving injections can harm your unborn baby); or are breastfeeding or plan to breastfeed (it is not known if the fat dissolving injections passes into your breast milk.
What are the possible side effects of the fat dissolving injections?
The most common side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, redness, and areas of lumpiness or hardness in the treatment area. These are all temporary. Bruising can last a week or two. Swelling (which can be significant) usually lasts between 1 to 2 weeks but can be longer. Numbness and lumpiness can last 4 to 6 weeks or longer. All of these are temporary.
A small number of clients can develop weakness of the smile muscles. This is caused by the effect of the fat dissolving injections on the branch of the facial nerve that runs close to the jawline. While the standard treatment area allows for a safe distance from this nerve, anatomical variations of the route of the nerve are not uncommon and may pass closer to the treatment area than anticipated. The weakness always resolves, usually in about 4 to 6 weeks, but may take several months in a smaller subset of clients.
Are both Laser Lipolysis and Cavitation Painless and Safe?
Both procedures are safe, painless and FDA Approved.
Mild redness may appear occasionally but will be highly unlikely to cause any actual pain. The heat from the laser pads and hand-piece felt during the treatment is perfectly tolerable. During the procedure, the clients remain comfortable and can resume back to work immediately after.
Cavitation is completely safe (provided you meet the criteria regarding your health questionnaire). This treatment is a non-surgical procedure without the need for anaesthesia. It has been approved by the FDA and there is no downtime following the treatment.
You may experience a high pitched humming noise in your ears during the Cavitation treatment (this is due to the sound waves made in the body passing through the ear) and this noise will cease once the treatment is complete
How many sessions are needed?
We suggest 2 sessions per week for 4-5 weeks totalling 8-10 sessions on each area. We do not advise more than 2 sessions a week as it can cause too much of a strain on the body to effectively remove all the released fat at once. Having more than the suggested treatment amount per week could mean that any fat that cannot be metabolised by the body would then be re-stored in the body resulting in minimum effect as with each session, another layer of fat is treated. Clinical trial data has shown that for most people, a course of 8-10 treatments over a 4-5 week timescale, does lead to greater reduction.
Fat is a solid substance, how can it be eliminated through the urine?
Because Ultrasound Cavitation causing the fat cells to turn to liquid (emulsification), this makes it easier to leave the body through the lymphatic and urinary system
How long does each session take?
Depending on the size of the area, a typical treatment session would take between 10-40 minutes Max (depending if the Cavitation was to be combined with other treatments). The longer the treatment time, the better the result.
Normal post treatment reactions
Mild heat and redness in the treated area – aloe vera may be applied to cool the area if necessary though this will pass quickly. In rare cases, the area may be slightly swollen but this is a temporary side effect and should settle within a week. Should this be the case, you MUST inform your therapist as soon as possible. Each person will react slightly differently and the settings will be adjusted for your next treatment.
Post Treatment Care
10 Minutes of vigorous exercise should be undertaken as soon as possible after your treatment (but within 4 hours max) to stimulate the lymphatic system and encourage the elimination process.
It should be noted that Cavitation is not a substitute of a healthy lifestyle and taking care of your body. Increasing your water intake to 1.5 litres of water a day and avoiding Caffeine & other toxins will further to help support the overall result and your body’s natural processes.
You are advised to avoid excessive heat (hot baths, direct sun) for at least 48 hours after your treatment and to firmly massage the treated areas daily to help encourage movement of the fat cell contents to your lymphatic system.
You may feel more motivated to take care of yourself after the treatment, after all, it is an investment. Combining Cavitation with a healthy diet and lifestyle will only further maximise your results.

Think about the placement of your fine line tattoo
If you want your fine line tattoo to last, consider placing it somewhere on your body where it will be well protected from the daily ‘wear and tear’.
People think ankles or fingers are ideal placement for a fine line tattoo, but those places don’t hold ink that well at all, no matter what the tattoo style is. You wash your hands several times every day (probably), your finders rub against each other, shoes rub against the skin on your ankle… Washing and rubbing can damage the tattoo, especially while it’s healing.
Take good care of your fine line tattoo
Keep your tattoo away from the sun, or make sure to use a sunscreen. This is something you should go by no matter how delicate, or not, your tattoo is. Moisturise, use tattoo after-care products, take good care of your ink and you’ll have a beautiful, crisp tattoo for years to come!
Fading tattoos can easily be fixed
Even if your fine line tattoo fades after 10 years, the delicate lines will be easier and cheaper to fix, or re-work. Most artists will regularly re-work your tattoo for a fraction of the original price. Also, delicate tattoos are a lot easier to get covered up or removed.
Glowingly popular, fine line tattoos are relatively new on the scene, and there are many questions about the style and concerns about the durability of the thin lined tattoos.
What is Fine Line Tattoo Style?
Delicate and elegant, simple or incredibly intricate, fine line tattoos are characterised by clean, crisp, fluid lines, often featuring a botanical subject, leaves and flowers, thinly outlined shapes and ornaments.
As the name says, the lines are very thin and delicate, almost as if they were drawn on paper with a fine pen. Artists will add some gray wash, dots or stronger lines for certain elements of the tattoo, some colour, especially stylized like a watercolour, can be incorporated.
Although it sound simple, thin lines and the delicate nature of the style do not allow a lot of room for mistakes, making this style very difficult to master.
Do Fine Line Tattoos Fade?
As with all tattoos, some fading will occur with the ageing of the tattoo. Depending on the placement, some re-touching might be needed. Well done fine line tattoos, however, will not fade any more or faster than tattoos done in any other style. Goes without saying, the choice of a good fine line artist will make sure you get a tattoo that lasts.
Are Fine Line Tattoos more Expensive?
No, fine line tattoos are not more expensive than tattoos of any other style. If anything, when compared size to size, a fine line tattoo will cost less than a heavily shaded tattoo of same size and similar motif.
Are Fine Line Tattoos more Painful?
No, fine line tattoos do not hurt more than other style tattoos. With fine line tattoos it’s mostly outlines, very little shading and almost no situations where the artist will need to do several passes in the same spot. So, you can expect a fine line tattoo to hurt less.
How to Take Care of Fine Line Tattoos?
As with all tattoos, it’s important to follow the artist’s advice on how to take care of your tattoo. Allow it to heal properly, and moisturise regularly, and your tattoo will last.

Why have a Hopi Ear Candle treatment?
Do you suffer from conditions related to your ear, nose or throat? Hopi ear candles are an ancient and natural therapy that can offer relief from issues such as sinus problems, compacted ear wax, tinnitus and headaches.
Hopi ear candle treatments can also help to reduce inflammation in the ears and sinuses, relieve the symptoms of hay fever, rebalance your body’s natural flow, and generally calm and relax you when life is stressful.
What can Hopi ear candles be used to treat?
Hopi ear candles have been used to treat ear, nose and throat conditions since Ancient Greece, and many people find that regular ear candling treatments offer relief from:
Asthma
Vertigo & dizziness
Headaches & migraines
Hay fever
Pressure caused by travelling – some people choose to have this treatment to breakdown excess wax and relieve pressure before flying
Swimmer’s ear
Yeast infections
Sore throats
Sinusitis
Glue ear
Rhinitis
Snoring
Colds & flu
Anxiety
Stress
Ear candling can also promote healing, boost your immune system, detox your lymphatic system, and even improve your vision, hearing and taste.
How does the treatment work?
The candles work by vaporising their ingredients and causing mild suction in the ear, which lets the vapours gently massage the eardrum and ear canal. Once the candle is placed in the ear, it forms a seal that enables wax and other impurities to be drawn out. Don’t worry, no wax or ash will drop into your ear.
Some people feel Hopi ear candles provide more relief for blocked ears than ear syringing because the treatment draws the wax from the ear rather than compacting it in any way.
What happens during a Hopi ear candle treatment?
The procedure is pleasant and non-invasive. At the beginning of the treatment, the practitioner will examine your ears and discuss your medical history and the problems you are currently experiencing.
You will then lay in a comfortable position on a massage couch before a Hopi ear candle is put into the first ear, lit and held in place for approximately ten minutes, after which the ear is cleaned. We will then repeat the procedure in your other ear.
How long does this treatment take?
Hopi ear candle treatment takes approximately 10-20 minutes per ear.
How many treatments will I need?
The number of Hopi ear candle treatments you need will depend on your reason for choosing this therapy. If you want relief from a short-term problems such as a cold, then you may need several treatments over a week to 10 days. For longer term problems, such as tinnitus, you may benefit from a number of treatments over two to three weeks with a follow-up treatment once a month from then on.
Are there any side effects?
You may experience some side effects for 24 to 48 hours post-treatment. Generally speaking, these are a sign that the treatment has had a positive effect. The most common side effects are:
Cold-like symptoms
Headache
Slight dizziness
Slight dryness in the throat
A sticky feeling in the ears or the sensation of loose ear wax
Many people find that positive side effects are better clarity of sound and an immediate relief of pressure in the ears or sinuses.
Do I need to avoid any activities after the treatment or follow a specific aftercare regime?
It’s very normal for ear wax to naturally work its way out of your ear over the first 24 to 48 hours post-treatment, so you may want to cover your pillows with a towel to prevent any staining.
We usually recommend that you avoid submerging your head underwater for 24 hours post-treatment, and that you drink plenty of fluids to help flush toxins out of your system.
If you experience a runny nose, please blow it instead of sniffing.
Under no circumstances should you insert anything, including cotton buds, into your ear.
Can anyone have Hopi ear candles treatment?
Although many people can and do benefit from this treatment, we won’t carry it out if you have an ear infection, perforated eardrum, inflammation within the ear, or if you have grommets fitted. We will also talk you through the candles’ ingredients to check that you’re not allergic to any of them.

With clients only recently discovering the true benefits of skin boosters, the request for these skin rejuvenating injections has unsurprisingly risen. With this increased number of treatments comes an increased volume of questions – and rightly so! clients want to stay rest assured that skin boosters are a beneficial treatment for them before booking in with a practitioner. Plus, we always advise clients to carry out their own research and investigations before leaping feet first into the aesthetics industry, even with a light procedure like a skin booster.
What Is a Skin Booster?
Ultimately, they are an injectable skin treatment that is formulated to aid in the hydration and rejuvenation of the skin. Developed with beneficial, moisture-surging properties – skin booster treatments have been designed to deliver saturating hydration to the deeper dermis. They help to improve skin quality as they promote a rejuvenated, healthy glow from the inside out. Formulated with hyaluronic acid (HA), a natural substance found in the body, skin boosters’ main aims are to revitalise the skin to improve texture and appearance. Although they will be developed with different ingredients, it’s more than likely that hyaluronic acid will be the primary substance.
Overall, they are a super versatile skin injection treatment to treat various areas for an array of perceived skin flaws.
Do Skin Boosters Work?
Considering a skin booster appointment can sit anywhere from £100-£500, clients need to know whether skin boosters are with their sometimes costly price tag. And spoiler alert, they absolutely are! With the rise in popularity of these treatments, there must be reasoning behind this skin surge. Perhaps we can simply attribute this love for skin boosters to the immaculate results they produce.
Skin boosters provide dehydrated skin with intense hydration to revive the dermis. Skin boosters specifically work to target dryness, crepey skin and fine lines – making them the perfect alternative to anti-wrinkle treatments, for example. Alongside aiding in hydration and the correction of fine lines – skin boosters work wonderfully to improve both tone and texture.
One of the most benefiting aspects of skin boosters is that they are perfect for any skin type and any age range (provided the clients is over 18). This means that the effects of skin boosters are advantageous despite the skin differences.
How Long Do Skin Boosters Last & What Is The Downtime?
The longevity of each skin booster treatment can vary depending on each brand, the skin quality and whether the treatment is maintained over a period.
However, skin boosters typically can last anywhere from six to twelve months as a minimum, depending on varying factors.
What Are Skin Boosters Good For?
To summarise ‘What Are Skin Boosters Good For?’, we need to delve deeper into the product’s label…skin booster. Essentially, skin boosters have been formulated to ‘boost’ the skin and give a rejuvenated and revived look – as per the name and label.
Skin boosters are good for an alternative option to more intense treatments such as anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers. They bring a more subtle approach to an aesthetic procedure whilst providing real and valuable benefits to the skin.
Unlike dermal fillers and anti-wrinkle treatments which are injected beneath the skin, skin boosters are injected directly into the skin itself to help intensively hydrate the tissue and inject moisturising properties. Skin boosters are amazing for reducing the appearance of wrinkles additional to providing a youthful glow for the patients. Essentially, skin boosters are good for providing patients with a fix for their skin insecurities, without invasive medication or going under the knife.
These hyaluronic skin injections always make the top of the list for treatments due to their versatility for any age, any skin type, and any gender.
Is Skin Booster a Dermal Filler?
Ultimately, no – a skin booster is not a dermal filler.
Hyaluronic acid (HA) skin boosters and hyaluronic acid (HA) Dermal Fillers are not the same product despite both injectables containing Hyaluronic Acid (HA) as the main ingredient. The two treatments are also not interchangeable when it comes to offering skin ageing treatments as they behave in different ways.
Hyaluronic Acid (HA) skin boosters are not cross-linked and are usually much thinner in consistency and therefore have a greater spread. Ultimately, skin boosters can be used to soften fine lines, hydrate, and improve the texture and condition of the skin. On the other hand, hyaluronic acid (HA) dermal fillers are generally used when volumisation, contouring, or augmentation is required in specific areas of the face.
Which Is the Best Skin Booster?
All treatments and products are down to both patient and practitioner preference. People may opt for certain skin boosters for different reasons such as results, brand name, longevity etc. However, we would always recommend the Revitraine Skin Booster, Seventy Hyal 2000 and Profhilo.
This is because Seventy Hyal 2000 provides intense skin-deep hydration and markets itself as a hybrid skin booster’. Additional to its moisture-surging benefits, Seventy Hyal 2000 also adds gentle volume to the skin and can provide a temporary (1- 2 weeks) contouring effect if applied specifically to facial areas that benefit from enhancement.
Summary on Skin Boosters
Overall, there is a very positive atmosphere and shift surrounding skin boosters, what’s not to love about them? The reason why skin booster treatments are becoming so sought-after and popular is mostly because they’re completely safe, non-invasive with minimal downtime and are recommended for any age group.

Absolutely!!!!! Facials are very beneficial for men too and can help reduce skin sensitivity from shaving as well as other concerns from lack of proper home skincare routines. If you do suffer from sensitivity after shaving, it is recommended that you do not shave immediately before your facial, as this can lead to irritation.
What Should You do Before Getting a Facial?
Although facials are a standard beauty procedure, there are a few things to remember before getting one:
Know your at-home products. Your practitioner is likely to ask you about your daily skincare routine. If you’re concerned about your skin, they can give you better-informed advice about what you should be using to tackle the issue; it may be that one or more of your products isn’t the best for your skin type, so it’s worth having a mental checklist of what you use every day.
Don’t wax or shave (up to 48 hours) before a facial. Hair removal can make your skin feel more sensitive, so you’re likely to experience discomfort (like tingling or stinging) during the treatment if you’ve waxed or shaved beforehand.
Think about what you’ve got planned. The fact is that your skin may be a little red immediately following any facial treatment – this is totally normal and to be expected. Any redness will clear up within a day, but you might want to pass on date night if you’ve spent all afternoon at JA Aesthetics, SPMU and Beauty Academy!
Are you taking any medication?
If you’re using an oral medication that’s known to thin the skin (such as Roaccutane), it’s recommended that you discontinue use up to 3 months before getting a facial treatment.
Avoid sun bathing and tanning beds at least one week before your treatment. If you’ve got sunburn, facials are the last thing your skin wants (or needs!). Let any sun damage properly heal before booking a treatment. After a facial, your newly-exfoliated skin will be more sensitive to the sun’s harmful rays too, so stay out of it for a few days. And remember: you should always apply sunscreen (yes, even to your face!) before heading out into the sun.
Don’t over-exfoliate in the two or three days leading up to it. Since most facials include an exfoliating treatment anyway, it’s important not to let your skin become too sensitive before its properly buffed clean.
What Should You Do Afterwards?
To get the most out of your facial, there are a few key things to remember:
Don’t pick your skin! Ideally, you shouldn’t do this anyway, but you really need to avoid picking at your skin after getting a facial. It’ll be especially sensitive after all the scrubbing, extractions and pore-opening treatments; messing with it some more can cause irritation – and even scarring.
Avoid using heavy makeup. After a deep cleanse, your pores will be more open, leaving them more susceptible to bacteria. Whilst it may be tempting to load on your full-coverage foundation if your face is looking a little red, you should allow your skin to settle. Stave off makeup until the following day, and make sure you’ve cleaned your brushes and applicators thoroughly when you do apply it again.
Sack of the gym (and the sauna!). Whilst it’s always good to work up a sweat, you should reschedule your gym session following a facial; sweat can irritate freshly exfoliated skin. Similarly, saunas are a no-go post-treatment. You’ve already been cleaned and steamed; heating your face up and steaming it some more is likely to irritate your skin or lead to broken capillaries.
One of the key things to remember about any treatment, is that there’s no quick fix. Facials – like any other beauty treatment – should be thought of as one part of a wider regimen. If you haven’t got your daily skincare routine down, one facial won’t be that transformative.
It’s also unlikely that you’ll be leaving the clinic with perfectly poreless skin. In fact, you may experience a break out in the days following a treatment. This is because facials pull the impurities deep within your pores to the surface; for some people, the skin gets worse before it gets better. Ultimately though, facials detox the skin; they can remove years of built-up sebum and dead skin cells from the pores, leaving your face feeling squeaky-clean

What is Lip Blush?
Lip Blush is a form of semi-permanent tattoo that is done to correct asymmetry, enhance the natural shape and add a pop of colour of your lips. The colour is always intense for the first few days directly after the session, and this will heal to be up to 80% lighter after 1 week. A second session, known as the touch-up, is recommended at 6-8 weeks to perfect any areas that might not have healed well.
If you suffer from cold sores it is highly recommended that you take anti-viral medication prescribed from your doctor or from the chemist!
What do I need to know PRIOR to my appointment?
This information is provided to ensure that there is minimal bleeding during the tattooing procedure. Failure to follow the below instructions can result in poor healed results. Bleeding during the procedure forces the pigment to be pushed out of the skin.
Do not consume any caffeine or alcohol for 24 hours before your appointment. This includes coffee, energy drinks, pre-workout and tea. Do not take fish oils for a week before your treatment. Caffeine, alcohol & fish oils act as a blood thinner, causing you to potentially bleed during the process. This will stop the cosmetic tattoo pigment from holding in the skin during the tattoo process!
You should be using a lip scrub and lip balm every day for ONE WEEK leading up to your appointment. Lip scrub daily with a mix of sugar and olive/coconut oil (make up a small jar of 1 tbsp of sugar and 1 tsp of your chosen oil, alternatively you can purchase a lip scrub but this recipe does just the same!) and use this daily. You should also be using an ultra-hydrating & moisturising lip balm to get those lips smooth & soft! This allows the pigment to go into the skin easily, as well as the numbing cream to be effective.
If you suffer from cold sores you will need to take anti-viral tablets 1 week before and after the appointment. This is to stop the risk of infection! A cosmetic lip tattoo will trigger an outbreak if you do suffer from cold sores, so it is highly recommended that you take these tablets! Even if you do not suffer from cold sores it is always a good idea to take anti-viral medication too.
You won't be able to heavily exercise (cause the face to sweat), use a sauna, swim or tan for ONE week. Moderate exercise is fine.
Facials & skin peels should be avoided for one week pre & post tattooing.
Lip filler should be done 1 month before or 2 months after your lip blush appointment.
You may experience hypersensitivity and more pain around or before your menstrual cycle.
What is the aftercare?
Following the aftercare instructions is extremely important in order to ensure good retention of colour during the healing process. Aftercare accounts for over 60% of the healed results.
Apply any medicated cream or healing balm as recommended by your technician. The cream should be applied for up to 7 days. Do not let the lips dry out - they should always have some form of aftercare balm or healing balm on at ALL TIMES!
Avoid getting the area wet for up to 7 days, which includes keeping your face dry during a shower. Use a damp face cloth or face wipe to clean your face.
Use a damp cotton pad to gently wipe the area for the first day. This will reduce the build up of lymph fluid as the brows heal and reduce the chances of scabbing.
Don’t put makeup on your lips for at least 10 days. This is because the skin is still healing. Applying makeup to the lips will increase the chance of infection.
Don’t pick at scabs, tug, or itch the eyebrow area. Again, this will increase the chance of infection and possibly cause skin damage and scarring.
Avoid saunas, swimming, and excessive sweating until the area is completely healed, which may take up to two weeks.
Drink from a straw! You want to keep the lips dry!
Do not eat spicy foods! Ouch…
Avoid kissing while the lips are healing! SORRY!
Long Term Aftercare: Wear lip balm that has at least SPF 15+ in it! Sun exposure over a prolonged period of time will fade the tattoo. Do not use strong chemical acids/ peels (salicylic, glycolic, lactic acids), IPL or laser on the healed cosmetic tattoo, as these will fade the tattoo over time.
What to expect while the lips are healing?
Your lips will appear a lot darker and intense than what they will look like once healed. You need to trust the healing process! Over the first few days they will be at their darkest. They might scab and flake, this is completely normal. While they heal, this will fade to reveal a much lighter colour. The lips tend to fade around 70-80%! Please keep in mind that everyone’s skin will heal differently! The true colour of the tattoo will not be revealed until after 6 weeks. The touch up is then completed at 6-8 weeks to perfect any areas that need some extra attention, as well as add more colour if needed!
Dark Lip Colour Neutralising
Dark lips can get lip blush too! If you have darker tones (such as blue, purple or brown colours) within the lips, this can be neutralised first. Clients who are within the Fitzpatrick Scale 4, 5 & 6 may experience darker tones within their lips. To neutralise the darker tones, this may take anywhere from 1-4 sessions. Please be aware of this before you book! You will not be able to achieve your desired colour in one session only. It is recommended that warmer colours are used, rather than cooler-toned colours.
You MUST send through a photo of your lips (by email) or ask for a consultation BEFORE you book an appointment.
If you suffer from hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation or keloid scarring, this unfortunately may not be a possible option for you.
Who is NOT eligible for this treatment?
If you are under the age of 18
Women who are pregnant or breastfeeding are unable to get this treatment.
Diabetics should seek a doctors certificate beforehand.
Those on blood thinning medication should not receive this treatment. This includes aspirin, treatment of high blood pressure, pain relief (Ibuprofen), Niacin, Advil.
It is also strongly advised to STOP taking fish oils, vitamin E one week before hand, and for two weeks after the procedure.
If you suffer from keloid scarring, it is strongly recommended that you don't receive any form of cosmetic tattooing.
If you have taken Accutane in the past year you are unable to get this treatment.
Those who are allergic to lidocaine, prilocaine, benzocaine, tetracaine or epinephrine will need a doctor’s note. You will be required to supply your own numbing cream.
Anyone who has any serious medical conditions will require a doctor’s note.

What is Microblading?
Microblading is a semi-permanent brow tattoo performed with a small handheld tool, using a feather stroke technique to produce the appearance of fuller eyebrows or to enhance the natural features of the face. Microblading is a softer/more subtle cosmetic tattoo than some of older methods.
How long is the appointment?
Two hours on average. During your appointment we will consult with you the entire time ensuring we are on the same page. Much of the time is spent measuring and drawing on a symmetrical set of brows and agreeing on your perfect shape and color. The actual procedure itself takes 30min to an hour. The touch-up appointment will take about an hour.
Is the follow up appointment included?
In order to ensure that the brows heal perfectly a minimum of two treatments are usually needed 6-10 weeks apart on average. This first touch-up is included as it gives us the ability to correct any areas that possibly faded or allows the client to make suggestions if they want adjustments with the shape or color.
How long does Microblading last?
The treatment is considered semi-permanent and will fade over time. Touch-ups are recommended every 1-2 years maintain shape, color, and detail. How often depends on a number of factors including:
- Skin type (oily skin fade faster)
- Pigment color used (lighter colors fade faster)
- Sun exposure (over time can cause fading and discoloration of the pigment)
- Use of daily anti-aging products e.g.- (Tretinoin (Retin-A) & Alpha Hydroxy). These products increase your cell turnover rate and will shorten the life of your cosmetic tattoo
Does it hurt?
We do all that we can to ensure that the process is as comfortable as possible. Before the Microblading begins, a topical anesthetic is applied to the area to minimise discomfort, followed by a liquid anesthetic during the procedure. Some clients may feel a slight discomfort, but it’s relatively pain free for most.
(PLEASE NOTE that if you are a frequent smoker, or have your appointment during your menstrual cycle, the pain level could be intensified.)
Can I exercise after Microblading treatment?
You must avoid working out for 7 days following your microblading appointment. Light exercising is allowed (minimal sweating), but you must clean the tattooed area with lukewarm water as soon as you are done exercising. The salt in sweat will fade the pigment very quickly and give poor results.
Can I have Microblading if I am pregnant?
As a precaution to avoid any complications, we do not perform cosmetic tattooing on pregnant women.
Products and equipment used?
To ensure the highest quality of safety, all of our tools are one time use only. ALL blades, hand tools, wipes, and any other product used during the procedure are disposed of as biohazardous waste after each appointment, giving each client peace of mind.
What should I do before my Microblading treatment?
If you have an ideal shape and colour in mind, bring a few reference photos with you to your appointment.
You may fill in your eyebrows as you normally would so we can take into consideration the shape you desire.
If you regularly get your eyebrows shaped, waxed, threaded or tinted, please do so at least 3 days before your appointment.
If you have been on prescription Accutane in the past, you must wait at least one year before considering this procedure.
You must stop using Retinol 2 weeks prior to your appointment and avoid using it for the 2 weeks following your appointment.
If you get Botox regularly please get that done no later than 2 weeks before your appointment. This is to ensure we can make your brows as symmetrical as possible.
Avoid chemical peels at least 4 weeks prior to your appointment.
Avoid direct sun exposure and tanning for 2 weeks before and after your procedure. Do not come to your appointment with a sunburn. In this case, email us at least 48 hours prior to your appointment to reschedule.
Avoid alcohol, caffeine, ibuprofen, fish oil, vitamin E, or any blood thinning medication 24 hours prior to your appointment.
If you plan to go on a vacation, it is recommended to plan your trip a minimum of 10 days after the procedure due to the aftercare maintenance.
What to expect?
Immediately following your procedure, the tattooed area will appear to be darker and bolder in color and more sharply defined. This will last 3-4 days. Do not panic! It is normal.
Swelling and redness is minimal with most clients, and will disappear within 24-48 hours. In some cases, it may last around the eyebrow area for up to 3 days, but will not prevent working or socialising. The treated area may feel a bit like a sunburn afterwards but there should only be minimal discomfort.
The complete healing process takes about 6-8 weeks, at which time the true color of the tattoo is evident. During this process, your tattoo will soften and lighten. Be patient, even if you think too much color has been lost, as your skin is still regenerating and naturally exfoliating. Wait at least 6 weeks to see the true color, as it seems to take on new strength, and it is only after 6 weeks that your touch-up/adjustment can be done. Keep in mind that microbladed brows healed up to 30% softer than the initial color.
Please note that final results can not be guaranteed as each unique skintype will hold pigments differently and break down at different rates. The tattooed hair strokes tend to have a more crisp look once healed on dry skin compared to more blurry strokes on oily skin. We will re-evaluate how your skin has received the pigment at your touch-up appointment and make any changes necessary.
Healed results will vary with each individual client and using a pencil or powder may still be needed. Additional sessions (charged accordingly) may be required to obtain optimal results.
Aftercare
- Wash your hands thoroughly before touching the tattooed area.
- Week 1: Keep the tattooed area clean by rinsing with lukewarm water and patting dry with a disposable paper towel 3 times a day, then apply thin layer of the after care ointment provided. Apply using a disposable cotton swab.
- Week 2: Keep cleaning them with lukewarm water twice a day for the second week, no ointment.
- You may shower or bathe normally, but avoid using any soaps or cleansers on the treated area for the first week as they can be detrimental to the bonding process that must take place for the pigment to stabilise in the dermis.
- Do NOT pick or scratch at the dry skin/flakiness; let the skin fall off naturally. Picking can cause scarring and premature loss of pigment. IMPORTANT: Once the flakes have fallen off, a shiny layer of healing skin will completely cover the hair strokes. It will appear as though the eyebrows are gone. Within 1-2 weeks, the hair strokes will slowly reappear at a lighter shade as your skin regenerates.
- You must avoid working out for 1 week following your appointment. Light exercising is allowed (minimal sweating), but you MUST clean the tattooed area with lukewarm water as soon as you are done exercising. The salt in the sweat will fade the pigment very quickly and give poor results.
- Avoid direct sun exposure for the first 14 days. You MUST wear a hat while outside during the healing process.
- Do NOT apply make-up to the tattooed area for the first 2 weeks. Chemicals of any kind may interfere with the healing and color of your tattoo.
- No swimming pools, jacuzzis or other bodies of water for two weeks.
- Do NOT soak your face underwater in a bathtub or allow the shower to spray directly in your face for two weeks.
Once healed
- Exposure to the sun over time can cause fading and discoloration of the pigment. Once completely healed, you may apply sunscreen on the treated area. Wear large sunglasses and a hat for further protection. Rinse and dry the area thoroughly when in contact with chlorine.
- Glycolic Acid, Retin-A, face peels and exfoliation must be kept away from the tattooed area as continued use could lighten the pigment.
- If you are having laser resurfacing or laser hair removal after your tattoo has healed, please inform the laser technician. Laser procedures may darken, lighten, or discolor the tattooed area.

Vitamins are micronutrients that are necessary for the proper development and functioning of the body. One such important vitamin is B12, which is extremely necessary for optimal nerve and brain health. Vitamin B12 is also called cobalamin as it contains traces of the mineral Cobalt.
Why is vitamin B12 necessary for the body?
Vitamin B12 is required for the:
Synthesis of red blood cells and DNA (the genetic material in all the cells)
Production of energy in the body
Maintenance of nerves and brain function.
How much vitamin B12 is required regularly?
The recommended dietary allowance for vitamin B12 is 2.4 micrograms for adults (both men and women) and 0.4 to 2.4 micrograms for children. The need for vitamin B12 increases to 2.6 mcg during pregnancy and 2.8 mcg during lactation.
What are the food sources of vitamin B12?
Vitamin B12 is naturally found in several animal foods, which include:
Fishes such as herrings, salmon, sardines, tuna and trout
Red meat and organ meat such as liver
Poultry and eggs
Dairy products such as milk, cheese and yoghurt
Fortified foods such as breakfast cereals, nutritional yeasts and enriched soy.
What are the signs of vitamin B12 deficiency?
Usually, the human body stores enough vitamin B12 in the body and hence, the symptoms of deficiency may not appear until it is severe. The common signs of vitamin B12 deficiency include:
Megaloblastic anaemia (the red blood cells become larger than normal and do not function properly)
Fatigue
Pale skin
Heart palpitations
Frequent headaches
Loss of appetite
Constipation
Weight loss
Sore, inflamed tongue with mouth ulcers
Numbness or tingling sensation in the hands and feet (indicating nerve damage)
Vision problems
Difficulty in walking and maintaining balance
Infertility
Confusion
Forgetfulness
Dementia
Infants show a delay in reaching developmental milestones and difficulty in moving.
If a person develops any of the symptoms mentioned above, they must consult a doctor for further examination. Undiagnosed vitamin B12 deficiency can cause irreversible damage to the nerves and brain.
Who is more likely to develop vitamin B12 deficiency?
Anyone can develop vitamin B12 deficiency but factors that may increase the risk include:
Vegetarianism: Plant-based foods do not contain vitamin B12. Therefore, strict vegetarians or vegans have a high risk of developing vitamin B12 deficiency.
Stomach conditions: People with an autoimmune disease called atrophic gastritis might not absorb enough vitamin B12 because they make too little hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factors in their stomach.
Old age: As age progresses, the release of hydrochloric acid in the stomach reduces in some people. This prevents the absorption of vitamin B12 in the body, resulting in a deficiency.
Lack of intrinsic factor: Intrinsic factors are a type of protein released by the mucosal layer of the stomach, which facilitates the absorption of vitamin B12. People who lack intrinsic factors have difficulty absorbing vitamin B12 from foods and dietary supplements.
Surgeries: People who have undergone gastric or intestinal surgeries may have trouble producing enough hydrochloric acid and intrinsic factors required to absorb vitamin B12.
Intestinal diseases: People suffering from intestinal disorders such as celiac disease or Crohn’s disease are more likely to develop vitamin B12 deficiency as they are unable to absorb enough vitamins in the body.
What happens during the treatment?
B12 is administered via a small injection into the muscle of the upper arm. Taking only a couple of minutes.
When will I start seeing results?
You should start to notice a difference after a couple days, but can take up to 3 weeks to feel full effect.
What are the possible side effects
The main side effect is injection site redness or tenderness.
